Queen Nanny was a leader of the 18th century Jamaican Maroons. She was formerly an enslaved African on the island. Much of what is known about her is from oral history, but she is famous for her resistance to the oppression of her people. Queen Nanny is featured on the 500-dollar notes from Jamaica.
